Description
Stunning Kylemore Abbey in Connemara, Ireland is just over an hour from Galway City, on the shores of black water Lough Pollacapul. Built in 1868 by Mitchell Henry, a wealthy London doctor, it was inspired by his wife Margaret.
At 40,000 square feet and 70-plus rooms, the castle had every modern convenience of its day, including indoor plumbing, gas lights, and fire hydrants. In 1903, it was sold to the Duke and Duchess of Manchester, and they resided there for several years until bad gambling debts forced them to sell the estate.
Irish Benedictine Nuns purchased the Abbey Castle and lands in 1920 after they were forced to flee Ypres during World War I. The nuns offered education to Catholic girls, and opened an international boarding school, and a day school for girls from the local area.
But the school was forced to close in 2010. Since 2015, the Abbey entered into a partnership with the University of Notre Dame. The Abbey now hosts academic programs for Notre Dame students.
The estate also includes beautiful large walled Victorian gardens.
Kylemore Abbey is one of Ireland’s most popular tourist destinations!
