Description
Door to the Gothic Church at Kylemore Abbey in the Connemara area of Ireland.
Sad origins of this beautiful church: In 1874, Mitchell Henry, his beloved wife Margaret, and their family were on holiday in Egypt when Margaret contracted dysentery on the River Nile. She died 16 days later. She was only 45 years old and the mother of nine! Mitchell immediately set about building this church in memory of Margaret. Mitchell and his wife are interred in the Mausoleum near the church.
Described as a “Cathedral in Miniature,” this 14th century neo-Gothic church was begun in 1877 and completed in 1881.
Beautiful marble pillars from each of the four marble regions of Ireland are incorporated into its design: green from Connemara, black from Kilkenny, red from Cork, and white from Tyrone. An extensive restoration project was completed in 1995, and officially opened by then president Mary Robinson.
Today, the church not only holds special masses, but is also the venue for choral performances, music recitals, poetry readings, and has hosted special events such as Other Voices: Courage.
