Description
This is the main road that runs through picturesque Castle Combe in England. It is called 'Street.'
Castle Combe has been called 'The Prettiest Village in England.' The village is situated near Chippenham just 12 miles from the Georgian city of Bath in the southern-most edge of the Cotswolds. The Old World feel of the village is kept intact by the disallowing of such modern atrocities as TV antennas or electric street lights. The mellowed 15th century limestone cottages have changed little since their early days as a weaving center. No new homes have been built in this historic area since about 1600 A.D.
The village takes its name from the 12th century castle which stood about 1/3 mile (500m) to the north. The castle was abandoned in the late 1300s, though some earthworks are still visible.
Castle Combe was a location for the 1967 musical film Doctor Doolittle. It also lent its unique character to films such as Stardust, The Wolfman, and Steven Spielberg’s 2010 Warhorse. On TV, you may have glimpsed it in Agatha Christie’s Poirot, and in Downton Abbey.
